A famous duel ‘Miyamoto Musashi VS Sasaki Kojiro’ in Japan

One of the most famous duel(1612) in Japanese samurai history. Kojiro said “You can’t kill me with that shabby wooden stick.” Musashi said “You’ve lost because you threw away the sheath.” Kojiro answered “I won’t use this bloody sword after killing you.”

@memmori1 actually the duel was completely leagal, and normal at that time. With no wars many samurai took to challenging themselves against other masters, it’s like dueling at 20 paces. In the book of five rings, you find (which I agree) there is no such thing as “fair play” in battle. Musashi was one of the earliest people to practice psychological warfare. He’d show up purposley late for one duel, then early for another. He used whatever he could to throw is opponent off their game.

@Slappy27 I don’t argue that the duel was legal (it was officially announced, after all). But anyway I think Musashi’s behaviour was rather offensive – coming late and using such an inappropriate weapon. That he never thought about ‘fair play’ (as well as his opponents) is obvious considering his previous fight against Yoshioka school when he killed in cold blood the young Yoshioka heir, Genjiro, who even didn’t try to oppose him and was no match to him.

@BuscoBeast The same running was in the old Samurai: The Battle on Ganryujima Island movie, when Toshiro Mifune played Musashi and Koji Tsuruta played Kojiro.

@MrZeus169 well, the sword is quite heavy, 2 hands hold also make sure you can defend well against your opponent. and in Sasaki’s case, I think it’s impossible for him to hold his nodachi using one hand.

@Slappy27 According to the book the late arrival was of dual purpose: to unnerve Kojiro and to catch the tide helping him in his escape of the island. And the idea of the wooden oar was Musashi’s only chance against Kojiro’s 3 feet long sword. If he used his ordinary Katana against him he would have had an obvious disadvantage. He needed something longer, thats all.
